Wa Ko Science Park & Aquarium, Prachuap Khiri Khan

Published · Last checked · Independent guide, no bookings

On a quiet stretch of coast south of Prachuap Khiri Khan town lies Wa Ko (also spelled Waghor). In 1868 a Thai king came here to watch a total solar eclipse he had predicted. Today a science park with an aquarium marks the spot. It makes a good family stop on the drive between Hua Hin and Ban Krut.

The eclipse that made Wa Ko famous

King Mongkut (Rama IV) worked out, two years in advance, that a total solar eclipse would be visible at Wa Ko in 1868. He travelled there to watch it with scientists, diplomats and foreign guests. The prediction proved right. Thailand later honoured him as the 'Father of Thai Science'. Sadly, he caught malaria on the trip and died later that year.

King Mongkut Memorial Park of Science and Technology

The park opened in 1990 to honour the king and to teach science, astronomy, technology and the environment. It has about 25 learning stations in three linked buildings. Topics range from energy and space to nature and the local environment.

The Wa Ko aquarium

The aquarium is the park's main family highlight. It shows freshwater, brackish-water and sea fish, and has an underwater tunnel. There is also a butterfly garden and outdoor nature areas. The park runs stargazing sessions and has space for camps and group activities.

Where it is and how to get there

The park is in Khlong Wan subdistrict, Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan district, on the coast south of Prachuap Khiri Khan town. Drive south on Highway 4 and follow the signs. Trains stop at Waghor station and at Prachuap Khiri Khan station; take local transport from there. Ao Manao beach is about 12 km away.

Fitting it into a Ban Krut trip

Wa Ko lies north of Ban Krut, between Prachuap Khiri Khan town and Bang Saphan. Stop on your way south from Hua Hin, or make it a day trip from Ban Krut combined with Ao Manao and Prachuap town. Allow two to three hours at the park.
