Ban Krut Beach Day Trip: Sea, Sand and Waves

Published · Last checked · Independent guide, no bookings

Ban Krut Beach is one of the longest stretches of sand on this part of the Gulf of Thailand. It is not a surf beach. The water is usually calm, which makes it better for an easy swim, a long walk or a lazy afternoon than for chasing waves. Here is how to plan a full day on Ban Krut Beach.

Morning: fishing boats and a beach walk

Get up early. Small fishing boats come back to shore in the early morning, and you can watch the catch being landed. The sand is often raked smooth in front of the small resorts, so it is a pleasant time for a walk before the heat builds.

Midday: swimming and shade

The beach has a gentle slope and fine sand, and the water is calm for much of the dry season. You can swim along many parts of the shore. Natural shade is limited to coconut palms and restaurant umbrellas, so plan your swim for the morning or late afternoon and rest in the shade at noon.

What about waves?

This old page was once about a 'wave trip'. The Gulf of Thailand here is generally calm, so do not expect surf. On windy days the sea gets choppier. Treat rough water with respect, stay close to shore and do not swim alone.

Afternoon: a ride along the coast

A coastal road runs beside the beach for kilometres, with palms on one side and the sea on the other. Rent a bicycle or scooter and stop wherever you like. Along the way you will see fishing communities and stalls selling dried fish and dried squid, two local products.

Late afternoon: the view from Khao Thong Chai

About 3 km from the beach, the hill of Khao Thong Chai holds Wat Thang Sai and its golden chedi. A road leads close to the top. From the terrace you see the whole curve of Ban Krut Beach. Mornings are often clearer, so you may want to come back at sunrise.

Evening: seafood by the sea

Ban Krut is known for simple seafood restaurants along the beach road. Food here is mostly Thai and can be spicy, so ask for mild if you prefer. Nightlife is very quiet, which is part of the charm.
