Bang Saphan Gold: The Story of Thong Nuea Kao

Published · Last checked · Independent guide, no bookings

In Thailand, the phrase 'Bang Saphan gold' means gold of the highest quality. For generations, villagers in Bang Saphan have panned the streams in the hills for tiny flakes and, now and then, a nugget. Here is the story behind the name and what you can see today.

What is thong nuea kao?

Bang Saphan gold is also known as thong nuea kao. Thai press describes it as about 99.99 percent pure. Old Thai chronicles mention it, and many people still carry a small piece as a lucky charm.

Klong Thong, the 'golden canal'

The best-known panning spot is Klong Thong, a natural stream at Ban Pa Ron in Ron Thong subdistrict, Bang Saphan district. Locals also pan in a nearby creek, Huai Janghan. The subdistrict's name, Ron Thong, itself refers to panning for gold.

How villagers pan

Panning is simple and slow. People use a wide pan or sieve, a shovel and a small can or glass bottle for their finds. They often spend four to five hours in the water. The tradition has passed down through families and is especially busy after floods, when fast water stirs up new gravel.

Flakes and rare nuggets

Most finds are small flakes. Large nuggets are rare and become local news. In 2018, Thai media reported on a big nugget from Klong Thong that was pure gold rather than the gold-in-rock more often found there. Some locals say panning can pay better than farming, but it is hard, uncertain work.

Visiting today

In 2017, local leaders talked about developing Klong Thong as a place for visitors to learn about the tradition. Facilities can be basic and are sometimes damaged by floods. If you go, ask locally first, respect private land and never pan without permission.
